I recently had my good reeds die on me a week after I put them in. They've got a bright tone which I dislike. (More squeaks, annoying tongue vibration with low notes, etc.) Now I've got some harder strength reeds being broken in.
I have 1 new reed from my old box of reeds left over. I want to be able to use that to practice on. But is it a good idea to abuse 1 reed for my usual 1 hour practice period? (I have all region auditions coming up, and I haven't been getting good practice sessions in recently due to my last reeds dying too quickly.

Diagnosis complete:
3.5s are too soft for me now. I just tried playing on the reed in question, and the first sound that came out was all spread.
Thanks. If I can find some Legeres, I'll try them out.

If you can get them, most folks prefer the legere Quebec cuts as a starting point. I never had luck with the standard Legere. The Signatures are very nice, but costly. I wouldn't try them until you know you like the Legere product.

As a "user" myself, I second the suggestion to try the Forestone reed. I have tried all of the Legere "models" and they have not worked for me. Since you mentioned that "3.5's are too soft for me", I would suggest trying a Forestone #4 or 4.25. Expensive, but well worth the cost as they last indefinately. I am still playing Forestones (4's) that I received in March, '09.
Too bad, however, that Forestone does not offer the same exchange deal as Legere. They do offer three reeds for the price of two to "first time buyers", but IMHO, that does little to help the clarinetist find the correct reed for his set up. Bottom line: Legere is more consumer friendly as a company but Forestone's product is better (for me, at least).
FWIW: I play vintage Buffet R13's (1960's) with a Chicago Kaspar #14 mpc.
