Discontinued in 2005 I think when they sold all their single reed machines to Rico.
I'm not sure if they still make cane for double reed.

I had heard that Rico is using the newly purchased Glotin reed making machines in the production of their newest Rico Reserve reeds in California.

They must have readjusted them considerably - the Reserves are nothing like the Glotins I bought years ago (I still have many of them - they didn't play very well for me).

This is from a clinic (Rico) I attended 2 weeks ago.
Rico bought all of the Glotin machines (pretty sure all of them as the widow wanted out of the reed business).
They had to do major and very, very costly renovation of the machines as they were in bad shape - paper shims, etc.
All of their higher end reeds use the glotin machines.
All of Rico reeds are hand clipped one at a time.

The Reserves are much better reeds than the Glotins I have. They must have done a great deal of renovation on the machines. To my eye, Rico is also using better cane than Glotin - maybe he was saving the good stuff for the double reed players.

Just a point of info:
Paper shims have been a standard practice for machinists for a long time before I was born - in the Navy we often went to the chartroom to get old charts to use as shim and gasket material. Charts are made on high-quality paper and are very stable in various temperatures and humidity. They have to be - you measure your position on them!
The machines may have been in bad shape, but having paper shims doesn't necessarily imply bad shape - most probably careful measuring of output and minor adjustments over time for wear.

I don't know - my memory says they were Gaia, but the reeds don't have the model printed on them and the boxes they came in are long gone. They are double-cut (straight bark), some with a large lower-case "g" above the strength and then lower-case "glotin", then under that, "FRANCE." Others have lower-case "glotin" printed sideways down the reed, followed by the strength and then "FRANCE SUPERIEURE." Any of that signify one model or the other?

Karl-- The Glotin reeds I bought are the GIII and they have "glotin" printed sideways, the strength and then "France Superieure" so I guess the other one means they are Gaia.

GIII came in yellow box the Gaia and Gaia50 came in blue box. I actually have had much much better result with the GIII than Rico Reserves but now I've almost finished all my stock of GIII I did try some V-12s (not been playing them for over 3 years and never in the Flow pack) and to me the quality and consistency has terrifically improved.

I have tried V-12s and played on them for awhile, but changed to regular blue box two years ago.
How were Rico Reserves?

Very fluffy at first and then died on me. 1 min first day,5 min second and 5 min increase for a week with this result.
