I will be playing this in January. I have never played it before. I have worked on it for about 2 weeks now. Theres NO WAY I will be able to play it as marked (180) I cant even play my scales that fast yet. I DO NOT want to play this piece (especially this piece) if its too slow. so, i'm wondering what you all think would be the slowest it could be played and still sound good? I am also working on the first movement of the Hindemith which could be an alternate piece if I dont have it up to speed.

I would say 144 as the bare minimum. It works well at 160 though.

If you don't know your scale very well and specially the chromatic scale then you have to master them before you master this piece.

Hindemith Sonata or Concerto? To be honest, from a musical point of view, I think either of those is more worthwhile musically as a solo than the Rimsky, which is useful mostly either as a teaching piece (for the chromatic scale) or as a recital encore by someone who is technically secure enough to enjoy playing it. In its original theatrical context (with the original orchestration) it no doubt had a more intrinsic purpose, but as a stand-alone recital solo for a single instrument (with piano accompaniment) it isn't in the same class as either Hindemith piece.
Just my 2 cents - you must have chosen the music for a reason.
