So, I've been happy on Vandoren 3.5 Traditional reeds for a while. I just purchased a new mouthpiece about a month earlier and adjusted quickly. Things were going well! However, it wasn't until the past 2 days that my reeds have all become low in quality and soft. The ones that were quite hard are still a tad hard yet stuffy, nonetheless. I have experimented with a few 3.5 V12's very recently as well as the Traditional reeds. The strength of the V12's varied from a little soft to moderately stiff, but even the best ones I've found in the batch didn't have such a great feel. I settled on Traditional. Then, this happened...
Do you think its time to switch to Traditional Strength 4? Is there a big interval in strength between 3.5 and 4?

Surprisingly, the weather was pretty steady. The weather has only been partly cloudy with sun, with exception to a few rain clouds today.. but no rain.
My Humistat actually shows a slight raise in humidity for the past few days: From 52% to 58%.

It's probably time to balance the reeds you're playing.
The only real way to tell if 4s would be better is to buy some and try them. If they're better, buy more. If not, don't.

Check my website and read the page on adjusting your reeds and keeping them consistent. If all else fails try the Rico Thick blanks, Reserves and Reserve Classics, they're all very good reeds but you still have to know who to adjust your reeds and keep them from changing so much. If you new mouthpiece has a closer facing than your old one, then you probably need to try some Trad or V12 4's. Closer facings require stronger reeds.

I have been practicing adjusting reeds for about a year, so I have some understanding of balancing my reeds. The new mouthpiece is more open and I had to graduate about a .5 strength increase to make up for the resistance (all on 3.5 Traditional). Like I said, I've adjusted to the mouthpiece.
I did the best I can with the soft reeds, but adjusting will only make them softer. In response, I've ordered another box (to see if maybe I got a soft box of reeds) as well as Gigliotti Plus brand after hearing some good things about it in consistency. If this doesn't work, I'll try out the Grand Concert Select (Regular).
It's a try.
