books on how to teach children clarinet

I have a book on how to teach young children piano. I was wondering if there is anything similar for clarinet? I dont mean method books, but something that might talk about how to go about teaching children specifically and different types of musical activities that could be incorporated into the lesson...just something more than a method book for beginners? also, is 9/10 about the right age to start? i know i was about 11. I guess it really depends on the size of their hands?

After they get their adult front teeth - can be mid 3rd grade.

Yeah, I started my 5 year old on eefer a few months ago, and he's just now starting to lose teeth. He lost one of his bottom ones, which hasn't held him back any, but when he starts losing his top ones we may have to take a break. He's going to hate that because he loves to play--he comes and gets me when he wants to practice.

I haven't started teaching him to read music yet. Right now I just have him play simple melodies and we work on getting his fingers sealing over the holes, playing in tune, tonguing, and note names. We'll probably add music reading soon, but I don't want him to have to think about too many things at once--he is just 5, after all (and I'd really prefer that for now he puts his concentration into using his ears rather than his eyes, anyway--that's what the violinists do with young students, after all, and it seems to work for them).

It's been fun watching him learn. His tone and intonation has started improving, and what impresses me is that he can hear the difference himself. I noticed a big improvement yesterday, and apparently so did he, because immediately afterward his face lit up with excitement, "Wow, Daddy! I sounded more like you this time!" Seeing him excited about it like that is simply the best part of teaching him.

As for me, I started at age 9. I already had some basic training in music reading when I started, because my mother had given me some initial instruction in piano (by way of a chord organ--remember those--since we didn't have an actual piano at the time). Unlike my son, who's starting on an Eb clarinet because it's more his size, I started on Bb clarinet. My teacher had me work out of the Klose method (as well as playing duets, folk songs, and other stuff).

I think it's largely a learn as you go sort of thing. While people have always put a lot of thought and energy into methods of piano pedagogy (not just in writing method books, but in developing a teaching philosophy as well) and people like Suzuki and Sassmannhaus have done the same sort of thing for violin pedagogy, clarinet pedagogy (at least in the U.S., anyway) has always seemed to me to be a bit less systematic/scientific and, among some teachers especially, seems to rely a lot more on tradition (e.g., playing through the 72 Rose Studies/Etudes).

Perhaps it's high time somebody write a book about clarinet pedagogy!

[EDIT -- I forgot. Tom Ridenour has written a book called "Educator's Guide to the Clarinet." I haven't read it myself, but you might find it useful. Tom's videos are generally helpful, and his book on fingerings is superb, so I would expect his other book is good, too.]
