From Yusuf
When practicing long tones, how long is a long tone? 5secs, 10 or until your breath runs out and you fall over?
( my wife just looked at me and said quietly,"Twit".
I think long enough to ensure you have perfect control over the note. What do you reckon?

Until you run out of breath, but BEFORE you pass out on the floor. The intent is to practice steady breath support, quality of sound and pitch control. Use a tuner and practice crecsendo and diminuendo also. No need to "run out of breath." 30 seconds is not unreasonable for a mp/mf sustained tone. (no oxygen tank required) Good clarineting.

Here's a guideline, whole notes with a metronome set to 80 beats per minute.
Each whole note would be played through 4 tics of the metronome.
Each note would be followed by the next chromatic note above.
When you reach the top of your playable range (the E, F or G above the staff) come back down.
hope that helps

Yusuf: Since you are just beginning, you should extend the time gradually, over several weeks.

Oh, I had to laugh. Yes start with counting in your head to 10 or 15, then breathe, then on up and down the scale. You can gradually increase the time as you improve. And, as William said, it is good to practice dynamics at this time as well.

1.Take 10 counts while playing long tone and take 4 counts to extingush redidual air and inhale. Next take 11 counts/4 counts, Next 12 counts/4counts, until
the largest counts you can. Everyday the maximum count become larger.
2.Do this at pp,p,mf,f,ff, i.e. at different volume.
3.Do this creschendo or dicreschendo.

Hiroshi is right---alter the dynamics.
I am 53 years olf. About 10 years ago my then teacher gave me an interesting wrinkle on long tones.
Start at low E, vary the dynamics and then add the register key so that you are playing 3rd line B. Go for quality of sound on both notes in all dynamics and a smooth transition to the high note.

From Yusuf
Thank you all very much for your input. Much appreciated.
I have taken note of all the suggestions and will be using them to compliment my practice routine.
As I won't be in danger of passing out any more. I'll tell the wife to put the recucitation box away. But be prepared to give me the kiss of life should I need it.
Take care.
Yusuf
