ok i, got my new clarinet today and i like it, but i've heard that your setup has to match the instrument. So being a newbie, how can u tell if your setup matches the instrument? thx.

Set up is a general concept that covers everything involved in making your clarinet play: mouthpiece, barrel, reed, ...
Your set up is good when you are comfortable playing on your horn --when nothing bad that happens can be blamed on the instrument.

Although the fact that I can't blame my mistakes on my instrument anymore is a bit of a downer..... hehehe. But yes, find a mouthpiece/reed/ligature that doesn't force you to 'fight' it. When it feels natural and is easy for you to play the note that you want, how you want it, that's a good setup.

when you can no longer blame the instrument you can still blame the reed! how often do you see a clarinettist take the instrument out of his mouth,look at the reed despairingly, fiddle with the ligature and start playing again? As long as there are VanDorens we'll always have the reed to blame....
