On Friday night I went to Banjo Jim's in the East Village to see a friend perform. His performance was great. After that I stayed to see the next gig. It was a blues/jazz group called Brad Vickers and His Vestapolitans. The first song they did had a tenor saxophone and the song was great. Then, to my surprise and delight, he switched to a clarinet for the next song and I think for all of the rest of the songs played except one. They are an awesome group if you like this kind of music. I bought their disc of course and it's great. Jim Davis is the clarinetist and he blew me away. I spoke to him after the show for a bit and he told me he was playing a French resonite clarinet and it was the Albert system. Well, I guess this proved to me as a beginner that however good or bad I am sounding, it's definitely not the clarinet itself that is causing it. Anyway, for you New Yorkers, they'll be back to Banjo Jims on Friday, November 6th at 8pm. It's located at Avenue C and 9th St. Here's their Myspace page to listen to some of their music and see other locations they will be at. - http://www.myspace.com/vestapolitans. They're also playing at some venues in Brooklyn soon. Enjoy!!
