I am a newbie. Do I need to put oil on the outside part of the clarinet? How often?

What kind of clarinet do you have? plastic or wood? I assume you mean put oil on the body of clarinet right? because you do have to periodically oil the keys.

Oiling the outside of the body seems to be a matter of personal preference. Some prefer to use wax. However, if you do use wax, most recommend that you use something like Renaissance Wax that will not seal the wood and prevent it from breathing. Some manufacturers suggest that you do not even need oil in the bore. My personal preference is oil (plant based) inside the bore and Renaissance Wax outside. For many years, I used olive oil. I am now an outspoken convert to The Doctor's Products.
