Mozart Quintet Arr. by Baermann for Bb Cl.!

Mozart Quintet (Cl/strings) arranged for Bb Clarinet - Clarinet music looks same as A part and the strings are arranged to go with the Bb Clarinet.

Was done way, way back and is Public Domain.

Wild! I'm a bit surprised that it was even done back then. I'd never play it like that, but for someone who has string friends and doesn't have an A, it's cool!

David,

I'm sure you've seen it, the quintet arranged for Clarinet in Bb and Piano. I have also seen the same arrangement for Clarinet in A.

Glenn Gould got away with playing the Appassionata by Beethoven two times slower than written same did Benny Goodman with the Nielsen Concerto. Reginald Kell got away with playing the Three pieces by Stravinsky all on Bb clarinet. So if you are famous you get away with things that unfamous people don't.

Or if you're a student. I noticed that this edition was made by Carl Baermann (the one who wrote the clarinet method), not Heinrich Baermann (Weber's clarinettist). I'm thinking he probably had clarinet students, not himself, in mind.

I don't think Goodman got away with it...

Some years ago, I performed one movement of the quintet with a viola soloist, and 4 clarinets playing the string parts.

Ralph, that's just disgusting!

Reminds me that the local PBS station played the Schumann Fantasy Pieces the other day with a French horn on the wind part, and the piano buried so deep under the sonorous croaking of the Frog horn that it was barely audible.

SIGH

Reason why I was surprised is that nowadays all you have to to is put the piece of music into an editor and bam, it's done - takes no time nor thought basically.

1907 there was a whole process to publish a work. So they must have had quite a call for that to have been done.
