 How lucky am I?
Author: JamesOrlandoGarcia

I was just asked to sub as the principal clarinetist with a Chicago area orchestra in a concert that includes Scheherazade!!! I rarely have ever heard of a situation where an orchestra is looking for a sub for the principal clarinetist. Usually the sub comes in on the auxiliary instruments or maybe second.

They are also playing the Saint Saens Cello Concerto in A minor and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. I've never played any of the three pieces so this should be thrilled!

Someone must have spoken highly of you or they've already heard you play. Good luck. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Hey that's great. Scheherazade is a wonderful piece to play. Start your practice now!

What orchestra are you playing with?

It's the Chicago Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The conductor had recently heard me play an audition that included the excerpts from Scheherazade. I guess he found them to be satisfactory!

Congratulations.

Scheherazade has solos that require great projection of personality -- the mad cadenzas, the waves of the ocean rising up high and then going down, the elegant dance of the princess. It helps to listen to how the great players did them.

The Ralph McLane excerpts CD has him playing the various solos. He does them particularly well. The Daniel Bonade excerpts CD also has excellent versions. Gary van Cott has them http://www.vcisinc.com/clarinetcds.htm, items CD211 and CD017.

The Bonade CD appears to have gone out of print. Barnes & Noble doesn't list it, and Amazon has it only at high prices. You should grab both of them from van Cott quickly. These CDs are not at the top of the best-seller list, and they could disappear at any time.

Thanks Ken! I'll check them out. I should mention the Chicago Symphony recording with Barenboim conducting. Larry Combs sounds amazing.

On another note, at the rehearsal I received several comments from other members of the orchestra about the fact that I was using a set of Muncy (2005) synthetic barrels. They were surprised that I sounded the way I did considering they weren't wood barrels.

For my money, Philadelphia with Ormandy is the superior recording.

How lucky you are depends on how good the orchestra is... :P

The Chicago Symphony/Fritz Reiner recording is really good, too. I think Clark Brody is the clarinet soloist on that one, but I'm not 100% sure. I think it was made in the mid-1950's.

In any case, it's a really great recording, and still in print after all these years. You can also find it on iTunes.
