 Looking for clarinet beginner book
Author: Caleb
Date:   2009-10-08 15:35

I am looking for a clarinet beginner book for yr 7-9 students. I hope the book will not introduce tonguing or clarino range at the early stage because I think slur is better for student to build up their embouchure.

I find some books seem to be useful:

1. Take Up The Clarinet by Chris Morgan:
2. Look, Listen & Learn – Clarinet Part 1
3. Let's Play Clarinet by Amanda Oosthuizen
4. A Practical Approach to the Clarinet by David Etheridge

I read some sample from the Internet. The “A Practical Approach to the Clarinet by David Etheridge”seems quite good. Can anyone give me some suggestion or opinion?

Etheridge's books are 1st rate.

Also Avrahm Galper's Clarinet Method published by Waterloo (not Boosey & Hawkes as that is the old version of his method) is very good. The Etheridge book is tremendous on "how to play the Clarinet" whereas the Galper is music and studies to apply the knowlege.

David Etheridge was my college clarinet instructor and I turned out ok. [wink]

He definitely has a firm understanding of the fundamentals on all levels of clarinet playing and is able to convey those points clearly in print.

I wrote a review of his new series of books:

I use them with all my students, regardless of the fact that he was my instructor.

BTW - Volume 3 (Advanced) is currently being expanded with additional exercises, excerpts, studies and information. Dave sent me a galley copy to proof read and it looks great.

Disclaimer: I was given my copies of the books at no charge, but have no association with them other than promoting their value to the clarinet community.
