E flat and B flat Reed Comparison

Hello. So far, I have been using Vandoren E flat 3's. However, I keep hearing that White Master work better. So are the stiffness numbers about the same? What I mean is, is a White Master 3 the same stiffness as the Vandoren E flat 3?

So White Master Reeds are playable on E flat clarinet mouthpices. But if I am going to switch to these, I need to know if the same numbers on the White Master and the Vandoren E flat will be the same level of hardness. Someone, please give an answer! The concert is in one week!

If the concert is only a week away, I suggest you not make any changes in your set-up unless you are having problems. Experiment with different reeds when you have more time.

I just started playing the eefer last week. And right now, I need new reeds ASAP, because the Vandoren 3 E flat reeds are too soft, which my director gave me.

White master, and Black masters will fit an Eb clarinet but they are thicker reeds at the heart and base so will probably play with a bit more resistance than a Eb reed would. You can also try using a Bb clarinet reed. Some players actually use Bb reeds, I do. You do have to clip off the bottom of the reed so the mouthpiece goes all the way down to the barrel. You can use a wire clipper or a small branch cutter. They may be a bit wider than your mouthpiece but try them before making up your mind. You can always sand the sides of the reed a bit gently on sand paper. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

A report from the new synthetic reed camp: I am playing Forestone #4's on my Chicago Kaspar #14 mpc and just recently--as For. doesn't yet (if ever) offer a true Eb reed--tried cutting down a F4 to fit my effer mouthpiece. It worked so well that I was immediately able to play an entire gig with it. So, a cut-down Bb F4 played well on my Eb HS* mpc with just the right resistance--F# & G6's "popped" right out every time with relative ease. It has been my past experiance that Bb reeds play with a bit more strength on the Eb mouthpiece than do true Eb reeds, so try using the same strength Bb reed cut down for your effer and see for yourself. For me, I like the new Forestones over cane--just wish they would expand their product line to include bass and sax reeds. So far it has only been Bb reeds, but they keep promising........

I use Vandoren Black Masters on my Eb mouthpiece. Cut the bottom off of the reed to fit. A #3 Black Master will probably feel a little heavier than a #3 VD Eb reed.
