 Parts for old clarinets
Author: knotty

Just wondering if new parts like screws and keys are still available for old (30,40 years) clarinets, or would it be best to find a junker on say ebay?

Thanks..knotty

Yes, and (financially-speaking) yes.

as David said .. but to elaborate a little.

If you need old keys and screws it is best to find the same make and model of clarinet. On intermediate and beginner clarinets they may have varying types of screws. So as David said ... Financially speaking if you can afford it. A junker "pro" may cost alot more than a junker beginner.

OK, thanks guys. What got me to thinking about parts is I dropped one of those tiny screws on the garage floor and it took me a long time to finally find it. I almost gave up. Now, I take the keys off holding the joint above a large plastic flat tray.

Thanks..

It's a well-known fact that some of those Things that look like screws are really mischievous outer space aliens. I'm not quite sure why they choose to disguise themselves as clarinet screws, but they can and will jump out of any tray or screw-holding board on the planet, just to bedevil people. They're expecially adept at rolling under the washing machine. For finding itty-bitty aliens on my dark gray concrete utility room floor, I use a magnet on a stick. Saves my arthritic knees from a whole lot of crawling around.

One of the advertisers here on the woodwind.org site, Ferree's Tools, sells a lot of different kinds of screws and other parts via mail order. You can get pads, corks and pretty much anything you need. Ferree's also sells screw boards, marked with diagrams and holes for all the screws on a clarinet, to keep everything organized while the keys are off. I'm an amateur, but fwiw, my experiences with buying from Ferree's have been 100% good. (I'm not connected with the company as anything other than a customer.)

Well said, Lelia, I also recommend a magnet for finding these *&%^ pivot screws, but hadn't thot of "on a stick", TKS will do, my stability isn't good anymore !! I make it a practise to return the screw to it's "home" while repairing the key, and thus avoid some of the loss/hunt time spent. If significant parts need replacement, I look for junkers of the same maker, often ask a friendly repairer for skilled help, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Yes those tiny screws on clarinets amaze me. I had to finally get out the magnifying glass to see the threads. I'm very curious how they turn those tiny threads, I have a metal lathe but can no way do work that small. I should have paid more attention to what dad was trying to teach me. (he was a machinist)

Thanks Lelia for the tip about Ferree's tools.

I always put an old towel on the table and take out a screw over it. That way it won't bounce into oblivion when I inevitably drop one.
When the key is off, I put the screw back into the post, and the rod through the tube in the key, to avoid getting them mixed up.

I also use a magnetized screwdriver http://www.google.com/products?q=magnetized+precision+screwdriver&aq=f or one with a screw-holding mechanism. http://www.google.com/products?q=screw-holding+precision+screwdriver&aq=f

Older Buffet screws and rods were fitted by hand. Jimmy Yan once needed a replacement screw for a 30s Buffet, but when he tried the ones from my fatally cracked lamp, he said none of them would fit.

Every repair shop has drawers full of old screws, rods and keys, which they'll usually give away or sell for next to nothing.

In addition to Ferree's you might try:

http://www.votawtool.com/zcom.asp?pg=products&grp=588&cat=tools
http://www.windcraft.co.uk/index.html
http://www.smallparts.com/

Finally, training courses for instrument repair include making rods and pivot screws from blank stock. Any good repair tech should be able to make a replacement pivot screw, or, more likely, shape an existing one from a junker to fit.

Thanks for the resources and tips Ken, copied the info and filed it in the clarinet folder. I never thought of the repair shop and old parts, there are number of them locally. I like laying the towel better than my plastic tray too.

Musicmedic is where I ordered pads, etc.

Thanks..knotty
