hi guys it's Jimmy. The novice has decided to ask another question. Why is it that in a box of Vandoren 3.5's, i've had one reed for 3 weeks and it still hasnt broke, while another one works right out of the box? I apreciate the help.

Cane is a natural product, and as such it is impossible to machine to close specs. There have been, there are and probably always will be better and worse reeds in a box.
Plus, each player perceives the quality of an individual reed a bit differently. What's great for you may be considered a dud by someone else, and vice versa.

There's always some variation in any box of reeds. It may be that the one that hasn't "broken in" for you yet needs some work done on it. It might be heavier on one side than the other, for example.
Or it may just be too hard in general--you should expect to find some of those in every box. A box of 3.5's will actually have several different strengths in it, all close to some "ideal" 3.5 strength, but still different.
On the other hand, it might just be a dud. That happens, too.

Learn to balance the reed. A reed that is a bit too stiff and is balanced and sanded down until it's still a little bit too stiff will brake in much better and last much longer than a reed that works right out of the box. People might disagree with me here like Ed Palanker says he has much success by tapering a reed and clipping it if it's too soft but I've never had much better success than at the most a rehearsal good reed out of it but more often I get worse result than that.
