 attack of the eefers
Author: Ralph Katz

I have gone for the last 5 years without hearing mention of the Eb clarinet.

Yesterday, an oboe player acquaintance asked if I knew where to rent an eefer - her wind quintet needs one for a piece they want to program.

Today, a conductor friend e-mailed me to ask about playing eefer in Maher 2.

5 years ago all my less-than-desirable clarinets, including the eefer, went to South Bend and were traded in. I started out wanting a better eefer, but there were only two choices: one with an OK scale but awful keywork, and one with gorgeous keywork but a snarky scale. The chosen alternative was to leave with a rather nice used Tenor Sax.

So, are there any moderately priced Eb that clarinets that anybody would recommend?

Actually, even a student quality effer (even GASP a Bundy) will play well with a professionally made mouthpiece and barrel. Spend your money on what's closest to your face.

Ive had EXCELLENT luck with my Amati Eb, its not too expensive ...around $700-$800, all wood and yes as long as you have a good mouthpiece, you are golden!

The Mahler has a very exposed solo and you want a good horn to really pull it off. I'd say try to rent a Buffet R13 or Prestige if possible and get a nice mouthpiece (Smith, Fobes or Grabner) to really get all out of the horn.

I'm jealous about you playing Mahler 2; one of my favorite Eefer parts!

You should return and get the one with the OK scale, that in itself is a major plus for an Eb clarinet. The key work can always be worked on, polished and re- lacquered. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

What Ken and Ed said.

I play an old Normandy eefer when called upon; a good mouthpiece and barrel makes it play very well.

I'm with Ed. It's the sound that counts.

Incidentally, I have an old ca. 1950 Bundy resonite eefer. I like it a lot.
