 Janacek Mladi (Youth) (Jugend)
Author: USFBassClarinet

Hello,

So one of my projects at USF this semester is becoming the Janacek Mladi suite. There seems to be two different versions though. One has the (youth) on the score next to Mladi and the other (Jugend). Anyone know the major/minor differences between the two? I know C.F. Peters publishes one and International publishes the other.

Suggestions or at least which version you have used?

Thanks!
Dathan

I believe that Mladi is the czech for "youth" and Jugend certainly means it in German therefore these are simply translations of the title, presumably to suit the local markets of the publishers. As far as whether there are any differences in the actual text of the music is concerned I am not familiar with these particular editions so I can't help you there. I have only played it once which was years ago and I am not sure what the edition was.

If your project is more than just a performance of the piece (research etc). or may be if you just have to write programme notes, perhaps you could have fun making a comparison.

Hope this helps.

Vanessa.

I've played Mladi -- a wonderful piece -- but don't remember which edition we used.

Peters is considered a better publisher than International, which does little editorial work. International is less expensive, though. If the International edition is a straight photo-offset of the Peters (or other good edition), you can go with that.

For what it's worth, the ICA library has the International edition. http://www.lib.umd.edu/PAL/SCPA/J.html

There are some fine recordings. Perhaps you could get in touch with some of the players and ask which edition they used.

I've actually come across the Peters edition cheaper than the international at around $25.00. There seems to be a "Urtext" version for $185!

and I believe either way (international or Peters) the bass clarinet part is in bass clarinet and it reads the same way even with German notation?

I seem to be having some trouble finding the international version actually, but I will probably get the Peters anyway since it is edited better.

And I am aware that ICA has a copy of it as well. Unfortunately I am a sheet music freak and like to have originals that I can keep.

Thanks for the info! Any more is appreciated too!

I believe my professor might have a copy of the International score so when I get it I will post what differences there seem to be.
