Hey, quick question about the Schostakowitsch symphony 9:
In my copy, in mvt. 2 m. 42, I have a written G flat. In recordings I've heard, this note has been played G natural with the following note a G flat.
Which is correct?

I've always played the first G as G natural and the second G as Gb.

These were live performances by two different orchestras - are there multiple editions of the piece out there?

A quick google search of:
Shostakovich 9 measure 42
led me to the Major Orchestra Librarians Association errata list for Shostakovich Symphony No. 9. It seems they believe that there is a mistake in the Kalmus Score, where the note in question is incorrectly listed as a G-Flat.
The Boosey and Hawkes pocket score has G - Natural.
I can't remember what Burt Hara played when the Minnesota Orchestra performed the piece three years ago.
If you're performing the work, ask the conductor/librarian...you might want to bring the errata list with you.
For an audition...play what is on the stand in front of you...it probably won't hurt you to do that...even if the parts are incorrect
BTW: Chicago mailed out music for their upcoming audition...there are back to back G-flats in that music.

This is kinda why I don't trust Kalmus parts. For those interested in (general) errors in the main orchestral repertoire then get Norman Del Mar's book Orchestral Variations. Very useful book especially to conductors.
