I was wondering what the strength comparison would be for the Reserve Classics? I always felt the regular rico reserves were slightly softer than their V12 counterpart, is that still the case with the classic?

In the short time I've been playing them, I find that the Rico Reserve Classic 3.5+ matches the Vandoren V12 3.5. I've also tried the RR Classic 3.5s, but they seem a tad bit too soft in comparison to the V12s.

I think the Reserve C.#4s are about the same as a regular Vandoren 4. I found the V12s to be a slight bit softer than the regular Vandorens so I guess that would make the Reserve Classic a bit harder then the V12s. If you're confused by what I just said so am I. Try a box and see for yourself. The one's I've tried were pretty consistent within the box, something I can't say for the Vandorens. I found the 4s just a bit soft but when I tapered and clipped them (see my website for what I do) just a tiny bit and they all turned out good, 10 out of 10. The 3 1/2+ were a bit too soft for me, had to clip them several times and the 4+ are a tad to hard for me but I was able to take them down and several they played OK. ESP

I think what Ed said about Reserve Classic 4s being about the same strength as a Vandoren 4 is about right based on the box I purchased. For me that means slightly too hard right out of the box. You really have to break these reeds in gradually, I think.

Based on the box of 4s that I received the Rico Reserve Classic sits halfway between V12 3.5 and V12 4. So, my experience is different from that of mrn and Mr Palanker.
This is possibly just because the one box i purchased was abnormal, or perhaps my experience is/was different because of my embochure/mouthpiece combination? At any rate for me the RR Classic are consistently softer than V12 (the 3.5+ i tried were similar strength to 3.5 V12)
btw
I am extremely impressed by these reeds- i don't find the dimensions to be more accurate than Vandoren (based on actually measuring the reeds on a perfectareed) but love the cut/design of the reed (even the tip, which I know some others prefer to change). I'm pretty much sold on them and don't think I'll be ordering more V12s when my current ones run out!
