 Intonation References

This probably sounds rather strange, but I was wondering if anybody is familiar with any books that happen to be less than 9 years old which have anything to do with clarinet intonation. I'm doing a research paper about tuning of Bb clarinets, and I need to find about 5 more books to cite for a research paper. Even if the book only has a page or two that's relevant, it's still considered to be valid for the project.

Thank you very much for your time and energy! It is greatly appreciated!

Rosemary

Googling "clarinet intonation book" brought this one up...

Tom Ridenour's "Educator's Guide to the Clarinet" does make mention of intonation issues and is a wealth of information about the clarinet, in general.

EDIT:::::Another possibility: Check out Stephen Fox's website and look for documentation on the acoustidcal studies and properties of the Benade clarinet design. There are links on this page: http://www.sfoxclarinets.com/Benade.html

Rosemary -

I assume you're familiar with related material such as Cooper scaling for the flute (a/k/a Deveau or Bennett scale). Boehm calculated the acoustically proper placement for the tone holes, and his work became the standard for all makers. However, his calculations were based on A-435, and extensive compromises were needed to make them work at A-440. Albert Cooper recalculated Boehm's work at A-440, and the results were so good that almost all makers have adopted some version of his work. See http://www.landellflutes.com/-Products/NCS.htm.

Clarinet has many other acoustical problems, because the addition of keys necessary to bridge the gap of a twelfth between registers, and to make a tonal match between throat Bb and low clarion B has required bore changes, which in turn throw out the intonation between the registers. Also, as far as I know no successful clarinet has been made using Boehm's concept of identical-sized, equidistant holes, though there's been at least one experiment http://anticwindbooks.chez-alice.fr/clarinet/clar15/clar15.html.

I believe that Tom Ridenour re-scaled his clarinet designs (Leblanc Opus and Concerto, Selmer Signature and his own instruments). If you haven't gotten in touch with him, it would certainly be worthwhile.

Good luck. I'd be very interested in reading your paper. If you possibly can, please consider putting it on line, possibly on woodwind.org.

Thank you very much to everybody. You were of great help!

It's possible that I won't be allowed to do anything else with the paper until the science fair is over in March, and I certainly won't be able to put it up unless my biology teacher gives permission.

Many thanks!

Rosemary

Why would you need permission?? Multiple authors on the paper?
