 Brahms/clarinet
Author: redwine

Hello,

I'm starting a doctorate degree at The Catholic University of America. This semester, I'm writing a paper on the clarinet works of Brahms, with a significant concentration on Muhlfeld. I'm just beginning my research and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for books that you've read that are particularly good.

Also, if anyone has performed on a Muller/Baermann clarinet like Muhlfeld played, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks!

Hi Ben, long time no see... :)

I'm part way through Richard Mühlfeld, Brahms' Clarinettist by Maren Goltz & Herta Müller. It is available from Van Cott, where you'll find a full description of the book. I hope it's helpful to you.

Sounds like a very interesting project.

Try and get the Colin Lawson's Cambridge Guide to the Brahms Quintet. This is a very informative book. Also I know Keith Puddy did a similar study in the 1980s and actually played Muhlfeld's instruments which led to copies being made. I believe Tony Pay has some. Keith's article was published in CASS so see if they have an archive copy.

All the best with the research

Several people make Ottensteiner reproductions, including Steve Fox. http://www.sfoxclarinets.com/basycl_art.htm I tried his prototype several years ago and loved the sound, though the response and intonation still needed work. Schwenk & Seggelke also makes one http://www.schwenk-und-seggelke.de/englisch/infopopups/klarinetteninfo_ottensteinelarinertr.html. I think there's a YouTube Brahms performance by Neidich, from the Japan ClarinetFest, but I can't find it on a quick search.

The Schwenk Ottensteiners I believe are exact copies of Muhlfelds clarinets. I remember being told that after Keith Puddy did the research they would make 10 copies only. Whether this held true or not I don't know but these instruments are near enough.

You can also find some interesting facts on program notes, google, and record jackets, or CD notes. Check the internet as well, it's amazing what there is if you look hard enough. Good luck with your degree. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
