I have just watched on tv the Vienna Philharmonic at the BBC proms playing Haydn. Any feminists will be much heartened to hear that there are now at least 3 female members including the co-concert master another first violin and the second bassoon - his must be an absolute first for their woodwind section. No clarinets in the first half but the second includes Schubert 9th Symphony with a much fuller orchestra so shall scan the ranks with interest.

Glad I wasn't the only one playing 'Spot the Lady' this evening!

"Any feminists will be much heartened ..."
I think the phrase you were looking for was "Homo sapiens will..." One does not need to be a feminist to appreciate that the Age of Neanderthals is finally coming to a close.

Why do you hate Neanderthals so much? Are you an archeo-speciesist, huh?
Joking aside, I too am moderately confident that the VeePeeOh - slowly, and cautiously, but nonetheless - finds the curve.

Don't hate 'em...just their policies.

Any orchestra which, in this day and age, continues a sexist selection policy just makes me wonder which part of their anatomy these men use to play their instruments.

If there was a Vienna Ladies Orchestra that was for ladies, I'm sure that too would be deemed sexist on their selection policy.

I believe there are a number of ensembles in Vienna that are all ladies. I notice that Andre Rieu has mostly women in his concert groups as well. As of late I notice he has alot more men on stage...usually at the back. Of course for alot of people he is more like the Lawrence Welk of Wein.

The young woman clarinetist who sits front and center is more subdued now than several years ago when, thinking she was not being observed, prodded Andre in the rear end with her clarinet. Yes, I saw it. How about Phil Spitalney and his All Girl Orchestra!

How does a young, handsome 50 year old, talented, good looking male get a job in Maestro Rieu's orchestra?
Hopefully Riccardo hasn't been offered that job also.
