I'm in the market for an Albert/german system horn. I was wondering what a reputable brand/manufacturer would be. Yamaha makes a german system horn, along with Amati. I have also heard about the Wurlitzer clarinets, and another brand made in germany. I'm looking for a webb site and/or a phone number to call. Thanks for any information.

I've played Albert system horns nearly all my (musical) life.
The instruments you mention, Yamaha, Amati, I'm told are pretty good. I haven't seen a Yamaha up close but the pictures I have seen look great. If they're anything like their 'regular' horns, they're well made instruments. I understand that some Wurlitzers are/(were?) pretty nice but would have to try the instrument to know if it's one of the 'good ones'. I have a Moennig Bros. (Gebrueder Moennig) that's pretty nice. Maybe that's the brand you heard about. There are lesser know makers in Germany who also turn out decent German system horns. I just don't know the names off hand. I bought 'my' Moennig Bros. when I was in Germany many years ago. They've been making woodwinds for a very long time and are still in business. I don't have their web page info handy but I'm sure, with a little searching, they're not too hard to find. I also have a Prueffer Oehler system I like. I don't know if they're still around or not but, like many a company who once turned out fine Albert horns, they very likely have long since, for economic reasons, scrapped their tooling setups for that. Don't expect them to come back in our lifetime :|
Occassionally, among the junk Alberts that show up on eBay all the time, a good one (not necessarily a 'name' brand) will pop up. However, to be 'safe', I'd stick with Buffet, Conn, Kohlert (and possibly Wurlitzer), if you decide to go that route. You'll have to be patient though, as the good ones don't seem to be that plentiful any more. And, there are other folks out there lookin' for 'em too.
It would fall into the category of advertising to pass along here the name of a collector I've dealt with him a couple of times. If you want to e-Mail me, I'll try to put you in touch with him. Might save you some search time.
Personally, if I had the money :o) I'd take a real serious look at the new Yamahas.

p.s. You mention Wurlitzer. I don't know if they're still around making new horns or not. Maybe someone can fill us in about that.

There are other brands like <A href="http://www.keilwerth.de">Richard Keilwerth </A>, <A href="http://www.amati.cz"> amati </A> doesn't seem to have a good range of instruments, <A href="http://www.boosey.com"> schreiber </A> is also another manufacturer

Hi Aron,
There is a lot to tell about german brands of clarinets. The most interesting ones are the smaller firms who makes hand-made instruments. Examples are Lothar Reidel, Schwenk&Seggelke*, Winfried Nürnberger, Herbert Wurlitzer, F. Püchner*, F. Hammerschmidt, O. Neidhardt, Leitner&Kraus and a lot more. (* website available). I have no experience with these brands, but all of them are known in Germany and make professional models. I'm only familiar with Fritz Wurlitzer instruments (the father of Herbert). The minimize the information it is important to know if you want professional clarinets (in combination with your budget), because of the top-line german instruments are quite expensive! Furthermore you have to wait for 0,5 till 3 years before the instruments are ready.
An alternative are second hand instruments, but the good ones are rare and also quite expensive.
