First Suite in E-flat for military band by Holts
Author: clarionman

Hi,

I am in need of an Alto Clarinet part for First Suite in E-flat for military band by Holts. The score shows that there is a part, but the set of music that we got does not have one. The music librarian have contact some music store sites but they don't seem to have it. I don't want to use finale and copy all of the notes from the score. If somebody has a part or knows were I might be able to find the part please let me know. It will save me a lot of time.

Thanks

Is that the slightly yellow looking paper edition? There are two editions of the Holst Suite in Eb that I know of (and also a brass band version).

The opinions I express are my own.

Best to contact the publishers direct, which is Boosey and Hawkes. They will more than likely authorise a copy of the part. Thinking of it the new recent urtex print included the alto clt part.

Davyd is quite right. The file on the site he cited contains the Eb Alto Clarinet part. And this is not piracy. The piece is in the public domain in the US, and you don't need permission from anyone to copy it.

Why don't you just write out the part from the score?

That way you know its going to be exactly what you have in the score, and you won't have to worry about waiting too long for the publisher to send you out a replacement copy.

Public domain copies are never reliable, as they are wrongly written out and sometimes totally off the mark..

Dean

Alternatively, you might download the public domain copy and compare it with the score. Implausible as it may seem, it may match perfectly, and you just saved yourself a lot of effort.

With all due respect,

Davyd,

Thanks for the link. The part that they have there is a scan of edition No. 120, but is exactly the same as the edition we are playing No. 501.

I agree with thedean that most of the time public domain copies are not quite correct, but this is just a scan of the original copy that is printed on the yellow looking paper, therefore all of the marking match.

Thanks once again.

Hi Everyone,

I just looked at the site mentioned by Davyd and it is a goldmine of classic band music. As a member of a 1950s HS band and a former director for many years, looking at these parts was like a step back in time. I realized quickly that I had played a significant number of the marches before in the original mini-sized versions shown.

What a walk down memory lane!

You got me, Hank, spent way too much time there browsing and downloading a few, but not the Holst.

Draz,

I'll bet A.R. did a lot of those at JTHS when you were in the band. I guess the March of the Steelmen is too new.

You're welcome Clarionman, Hank, and 78s2CD. :) I'm always hesitant to recommend such sites, given the righteous wrath of the copyright police that inevitably follows. But so far (knock veneer) so good.

Not to be picky, but we are all musicians, after all:

It's H-O-L-S-T, folks.
