Some time back I had a new Clarinet Student show up as a basic beginner and he had with him a new student instrument which also included some litrature by a Dr Sandra Downing & Peter J Moore. There were two books, one a small pocket book entitled Clarinettist's Technique Doctor and the other a larger book entitled Playing the Clarinet is EASY ! I found them very well laid out for a beginner but I saw that part of the teaching method was to instruct the student to BREATHE into the instrument, not BLOW. At first I thought it was most unusual to be telling a beginner student that but later on I got to thinking about it myself and have come to the conclusion, yes that is correct as that is actually what I do when I play a wind instrument. It seems to be an entirely different way of thinking about it and is most likely not an original idea anyway. Well fellow clarinetist's what do you think about it . After all it wouldn't have to same ring to it to say that a trumpet player breathes his instument would it.

I've bought these books as well, and showed them my teacher who really found them enlightening, especially the part dealing with the "break" (or rather the lack thereof, as the author claims). I've never had a problem with the chalumeau/clarion transition while a friend of mine still struggles with a smooth A-B transition. Maybe it's really a mental thing, just like the breathing metaphor.
I found those books very inspiring, and certainly a good complement to any instructive library.
