 Need Help with wooden clarinets!

Hi :D

I am a student at university(my major isn't music) and here I belong to an amateur orchestra.
I only just started playing at Jan 2009, so I'm still a beginner.
I play on a plastic clarinet...as far as i know it's not ebonite but rubber(?) with Vandoren M30 mouthpiece(teacher's advice) and V12 #3 reed.

When I first bought the instrument I was not quite sure whether I would like the clarinet or not so I was hesitant to spend around$1000 on a E11/
however after a month's practice with the orchestra for a concert this summer I found out that I like the instrument quite a lot!
I am planning to play in the orchestra for 3 more years and wish that I could keep the clarinet as a lifetime hobby.

So I'm planning on an upgrade to a wooden clarinet. I especially like the "warm" sound that the clarinet makes, however I find it quite impossible with the horn I possess..(well the problem could be within me, however when I tried wooden clarinets with the exact same mouthpiece and reed; I produced a much nicer sound)

I am considering E11(-France?)/E13 or R13
There are so so so many other clarinets out there... I know but it's really hard to get information here in Korea(most players use Buffet/Yamaha)

What choice should I make?
I think R13(new) is way too expensive.....considering I'm only a beginner. However if I get an E11 then someday I might regret for not having bought the R13 at once(because then I get to spend extra $1000 for the E11)
I don't want to make the same mistake once again.( I think I should have bought the E11 straightaway...;;)

So!

1) E-11 should be enough

2) get an E-13 and stick to it

3) instead of getting E-13 spend little more and get a R-13

4) get a second-hand R-13/RC( quite risky, isn't it?)

What do you recommend?
I think this is a really nice place
Hope you guys can help:)

Another possibility: The Ridenour 576 BC is an excellent hard rubber instrument, built to pro standards. You can play it indoors or out, and you never have to worry about the wood cracking, like you would with any wooden clarinet. It's a far better horn than the E11. It is better than many R13 instruments I have played. Also, it only costs about $1000 new, and that also means it comes with a warranty and lifetime customization by the designer, Tom Ridenour, who will forget more about clarinets than I ever even knew.

Yeah totally agree with Jeff. My Ridenour is better than my R13. I think most people who played it became fans of it. lol.

I'm having the same problem, and Im getting the same exact advice, I checked out the Lyrique and have my band instructor doing further research. (he also has another 5 people helping me) And so far, the only bad thing about the Lyrique they've been able to come up with is if its wet for to olong, its grows fungus, But you should never keep your clarinet wet for any amount of time, so I dont see how thats a problem :)

Good Luck!!

If I hear anything else, good or bad, I'll be sure to let you know!! :)

I have owned my Lyrique since December, and they are great instruments. If your band director has a question, have him contact me off the list via e-mail. He can get my e-mail by clicking on my user name on any post I have made.

So you know, I have been playing clarinet since 1968. I have owned two Bundys, several Buffets, a Leblanc, a Leblanc/Backun Cadenza, a Rossi and the Lyrique. The Lyrique has been the most consistently in-tune one of the bunch, and the rubber is more stable than wood.

When I got mine, Tom included one of his intermediate mouthpieces, which was decent, but did not suit me as well as the ones I am now using. Of course my regular mouthpieces were considerably more expensive. Even so, I picked those out of a set of sample pieces sent by the two different gentlemen who made them. All in all, I auditioned over $1500 in mouthpieces to find those two.

For marching season, you could attach a mouthpiece to a black-painted PVC pipe, and I doubt if anyone would notice. Marching band has nothing to do with making music.

Additional point: ANY clarinet will grow mildew if kept damp and in the dark for any appreciable period of time. It has nothing to do with being made of rubber. That same condition would pretty much trash a decent wooden clarinet right quickly!

Thanks

However there is no way here in Korea for me to try on the Lyrique
Even if it's made of rubber(then what could be the great big difference with mine- I'm not sure) I wanna have a go before I pay for the instrument..;

Thank you JJAlbrecht... I definietly agree with waht you said about mildew... I was slightly puzzled when my teacher brought that up... he knows I talke good care of my instruments... how else would I have a 50-year-old clarinet in good playing condition, which was my mom's in high school. I may give him your e-mail to ask general questions about it, if you don't mind. He's talking to Tom Ridenour himself as well.

I read somewhere that there's a trial period on the Lyriques... I'm not sure if that applies to people in Korea though... I'm sorry I can't be more help :(
