 Legere reeds
Author: alanporter

I have recently started using Legeres and am finding the edges of the reeds rather sharp. If I play for a long time my lower lip becomes sore. Does anyone else have this problem ?

Yes I do. I`ve used a little sanding with the finest emery paper on the sharp edges and this seems to help a little.

I played Legere Trad's #3 for over a year on my soprano clarinet and still use them on my bass clarinet without noticing any soreness from sharp edges. I'm now using Forestone #4's on soprano (for me, they sound better than the Legeres) and they also seem comfortable on my lip. Maybe it's just the "newness" of the synthtic material that you are reacting too.

I recently invested in a Legere reed for the first time to help me through a few weeks of concerts and as an emergency back up.

I was somewhat sceptical ( I've always been a Vandoren girl and us Capricorns don't like change ;) ) Anyway, I very quickly settled with it and found it very comfortable on the lip and not sharp at the edges at all. I was playing about 3 hours a day- which I guess is a fairly long time.

The Legere served it's purpose and I'm keeping it next next to the Vandorens just in case....

Sand, file, bevel the edges.

I know that many of you very fine players use and like the Legere reeds. I cannot get them to work for me and I really want them to work because the convenience of using one at times would be fantastic. I find that the reeds sluggish, they get soft fairly quickly and the sound is unremarkable. I own a few mouthpieces and ligatures but I am great friends with a very fine player who has the money to feed his addiction to clarinet accessories so I have been able to play the Legeres on many top flight mouthpieces.

Suggestions or comments ?
