When I check for mpc/barrel, I often see it on description.
This is what I received from one of barrel makers.
"Overall, the A model barrel is more free blowing and responsive, while the B model is resistant."
Somebody please tell me what I can expect from mpc/barrel with free blowing/resistance.

Not as much back pressure. Many times free blowing and bright go hand in hand. Free blowing might mean you could play a slightly harder reed.

You should always look for just the right amount of resistance for you because to free blowing tends to give you an unfocused tone, tendency to go flat, while too much makes it difficult to control and articulate. When I've chosen the barrels for my clarinets I looked for my comfort zone. I always tried to match my Bb and A as close as possible so when I switch back and forth there's not a big difference in resistance. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

For the life of me I can never understand all this rigmarole concerning barrels? I have Bb & A Clarinets. I purchased them, they arrived, I been using them ever sinced they arrived. Each one came with two barrels, one shorter than the other. Both instruments sound just lovely even when I play em. I have mucked around with various mouthpieces which DO make a difference but the barrels? They are just the short bits that I tune these pipes with

I can just hear the barrell makers gasping.......Barry, perhaps you are just one of those fortunate guys who can adapt to any equipment variation

Shouldn't that be the norm? Shouldn't we be able to adapt to any equipment, within reason, and sound like ourselves anywhere?

That's exactly how I feel about reeds/mouthpieces. Or is it more subtle than that? (Man, this stuff is hard to put into words! But at least we're not trying to define a 'dark' sound :-D )
