I'm thinking of buying a clarinet second hand from my local store and I wanted to get an idea of what it's like before I do. It's a Selmer 10S Full Boehm but without the low Eb. I hear it has rather a good reputation and is apparently in excellent condition.
What makes this such a desirable clarinet? Will it play nicely with my Selmer C85 120 mouthpiece?
In addition to this, I was wondering what the signs are that I might need to move to a harder reed?
Thanks

If you find your tone is getting weak, thin and buzzy, and pitch is becoming unstable then try a slightly harder reed to see if that helps.
The 10S will be fine with the C85 mouthpiece.
If you do go for this clarinet (and you'll be kicking yourself if you don't), then make use of the extra gadgets it has fitted:
LH forked Eb/Bb - on the top joint you have a ring for LH3, so you can play Eb or Bb as xox|ooo instead of the long, side or cross key fingerings. Playing the interval C-Eb or G-Bb is dead easy - just lift LH2 for the Eb or Bb. Also makes an Ab-Bb trill easier - play Ab and trill with LH2 only.
Articulated C#/G# - you can do proper B-C# and F#-G# trills by keeping the C#/G# touch held down and trilling with RH2. There's also a duplicate C#/G# touch - an extra 'sliver' key for RH2 which is the:
C-Db, G-Ab and high E-F trill key - the 'sliver' key for RH2 is used for trilling the C#/G# key instead of trilling with LH4, and RH2 won't fatigue so quickly as LH4.
LH Ab/Eb lever - duplicates the RH Ab/Eb key.
