Hello!
Another year begins here at USF. It will be my second year as a music ed major on bass clarinet and I was wondering if someone here could offer some suggestions for recital pieces or jury pieces or anything I should play. I played the Weber Viola pieces Andante and Hungarian Rondo last year (Howard Klug Edition). I've looked at the Wolfgang Gabriel sonata and sonatine recently but find them a little too lengthy presently to play for anything. (please don't be afraid to suggest longer sonatas for a later study though!) Has anyone here performed the Gabriel pieces?
Any suggestions?
and by the way...does Terje Lerstad still post on here? I have seen some past posts of his when using the search but don't see anything recent. In fact, I love looking at the Contrabass fingering chart he has on his site but haven't ventured on it at all yet.
Thanks!!!

The Hindemith Bassoon Sonata works very well on bass clarinet. According to Josef Horak, Hindemith said he actually preferred it that way, at least when Horak played it.
On YouTube, there are lots of standard clarinet solos (for example, the Weber Concerto # 1) played on bass.
Use the search function here to find much more -- for example, the Bach Suites for Solo Cello.
The Bellison edition of the Schubert Arpeggoine Sonata is wonderful on bass.

I tried the search function but it ended up muddled with a lot of other stuff as well. Most of what I came across was the Hindemith, clarinet sonatas, Bozza, or cello suites. It seems that is a very limited list for bass clarinet repertoire. the Arpeggoine Sonata might work well and I did play a string transcription last year but I might get in trouble for playing another transcription. They like us to play SOME of our own instruments music.

"Everyone needs to write a bass clarinet sonata or solo of some sort :D"
That's the truth!! I've been bugging two local composer's about writing something for the bass clarinet for years, but so far, they have not gotten around to it. Questions they raise: who/how many will actually play it and the related economic consideration, how many copies would actually sell if published?? Nevertheless, I continue to be proactive in encouraging some/any composition and I encourage all bass clarinetists who may have composer friends on this BB to do the same.
