I've been playing now consistently for a few months as a beginner. I feel like I'm ready to move up to a 2.5 strength now. I had originally tried 2.5 when beginning, but thought it was too strong and have been playing 2's happily for the past few months. I've successfully been using Mitchell Lurie 2's and also have a box of Mitchell Lurie 2.5's which I'm starting to get comfortable with little by little. I also bought a box of Vandoren 2's a while back. I was wondering if Vandoren 2's are really equal to Mitchell Lurie 2.5's. It sure seems that way.
Is there a factual answer to the above question?
Thanks in advance.

Lurie reeds are softer than Vandorens, in general. Reed charts rate Vandoren 2's as being harder than Lurie 2.5's., for example. If you play on a Lurie 4.5, you might be comfortable on a Vandoren 3.
Here are some charts that will give you a rough rundown.

You'll find comparative-strength charts on the Web sites of most reed manufacturers. Try Vandoren and Rico, whose parent company makes Lurie reeds as well.
That said, how the reed plays, not the number or the maker, will determine what's best for you.
