Does anyone know of any good solo pieces for bass clarinet that aren't so difficult that it would take me until next christmas to learn, but aren't so easy that I could sight read them? I would have to be able to play it by the end of May for my jury. I have been playing bass clarinet for 2 months in the University wind ensemble and my Bb clarinet is falling apart and needs an overhaul. So if I can convince my private lesson instructor I am thinking about having bass clarinet lessons for the rest of the semester. The only problem is I need bass clarinet literature to work on and maybe some studies. Otherwise I am stuck playing my friend's clarinet (it has a mind of it's own). Thanks.

first of all....do you happen to go to Frostburg?? Okay..on to the music...I am about to do a solo tomorrow for my church on the song Sonata in G minor by Eccles. I also love Sonata in A minor by Marchello. I play clarinet solos also...like Concertino by von Weber. But that is hard. Those sonata are pretty easy but there is a couple of spots you will have to work on. there are other pieces I play and own but can't think of them now....I have the contest and collection book by Rubank. That had some grade 5 solos and mostly grade 4 solos in there. I sight read one for my audition. It was good. Keep working at the bass. It's cool.

You could try Voltage by Pierre Max Dubois pub by Billaudot orExcursions (Variations on A theme by Paganini), yes THAT theme, by Keith Ramon Cole pub by Emerson in the UK.

Try the Bach cello suites (!), Le Pionnier (sic) by Cailliet (grade 4), a piece by Yvonne Desportes (grade 4-5), and a piece by ??? called Ballade, a grade 6 piece. Sorry for the incomplete info. My library is at my studio ao this is off the top of my head. Carl Frangkiser also wrote a piece.

There is a piece called Wildwood by Benett that may get your interest if you are a competent player.

Amy -
The Hindemith Bassoon Sonata works wonderfully on bass clarinet and is not too difficult. For more of a challenge (a *lot* more), try the Schubert Arpeggione Sonata.
The Hindemith is in bass clef, and the Schubert is in bass and tenor clef. I know the Schubert has been transcribed for Bb clarinet, and I think the Hindemith has been, too. However, you're in college now, and if you're serious about bass clarinet, you're going to be reading bass clef a lot and also transposing parts written for instruments in C and bass clarinet in A. It's an essential skill, and there's no time like the present to learn how.
Best regards.

A fun piece to play with a lot of 16th note runs, Handel's Suite in A minor, need a piano accomp. It's not easy enough for sight reading but hard to enough to challenge you. A lot of trills.
