 Swabs for Eb clarinets?
Author: Trevor M

Does anybody have a recommendation for silk swabs for Ebs? The dinky little chamois that came with my Patricola isn't that great but it's hard to find something better for sale. I tried a soprano sax swab (since some retailers claim they can be used for both) but it was clearly much too large.

Thanks, Trevor

Use the Doctor's Swab. It works in my Eb!

My Gem clarinet swabs also fit.

I use a Bb silk hankerchief type swab with my Yamaha 621 effer. I do not like those little chamois swabs for any clarinet.

Make your own from a silk necktie bought at the Salvation Army store....

I agree with William - my main Eb is a Yamaha 621 and I have had no problems with a Bb silk swab. It has never caught on the register tube. I have also not had any problem with the same swab brand on Bundy, Woodwind or Amati eefers.

BG swab for Eb is excellent. It works for Bb and A as well.

lol, i have this same problem, but for me, The skrew inside the clarinet close to the barrel makes it impossible for almost any swab to go in it. I tried with a Yamaha small... didnt work lol

Although I was able to use a larger swab on my R13, the upper joint on the Prestige seemed to catch them around the octave key. I have used the BG chamois swab and also a Silk Rigoutat oboe swab that work very well. The BG swab goes through the whole instrument easily whereas I do it by the joint using the Rigoutat oboe swab. (The Prestige Eefers separate the two joints, unlike most.) I have used a regular swab on the lower joint and bell and it seems fine on that.

Good luck!

For skinny metal clarinets and Eb sopranos, a silk oboe swab works well.

Uhm, my metal clarinet may be skinny yet it has a big heart - its bore is just as every other clarinet's.

Speaking of oboes, yes, mine needs a swab. I really wonder whether I should abuse one of those yucky silk ties in my closet...

There's huge variety in the bore dimensions of metal clarinets. They're far less standardized than wooden and plastic clarinets. I've got some Bbs that are a tight fit even for an oboe swab. I've also got an old metal double-walled Conn with what would be considered a wide bore by today's standards.

Recently, when an old silk jacket wore out, I harvested as much sound fabric as I could retrieve from it. Might come in handy for custom-made bore swabs some day....
