My question is a quick one. Do many people play different mouthpieces on both their A ans Bb clarinets? I don't because I dont wat to go between 2 mpcs. during a performance if I'm having to go back and forth. But I'm just curious as to weather other people have different mpcs. for the 2 different horns.

I use two different mouthpieces. Mainly because the two (MY Bb and A) respond differently.

I play LeBlanc Concertos and am ljucky enough to be able to use the same mp on both clarinets. I also use the A barrel on both--it makes it easier to switch horns quickly. I first tune the A by pulling the mp out a bit, then when moving my mp/barrel set-up to the Bb, I leave the mp in position and make any necessary adjustment by pulling the barrel a bit. Works for me!!! Good luck.

I've selected my B-flat and A clarinets and matched them to each other so that I can use not only the same mouthpiece on both, but the same barrel/mouthpiece combination. Since it's easy to pull off or dislocate the ligature and reed when making a quick mouthpiece-only switch, I avoid that by pulling off and switching the combined mouthpiece/barrel assembly. My reasoning is that the mouthpiece/reed assembly is by far the most critical factor in sound and response, so I like to keep that assembly consistent during a performance when switching between clarinets. I do have the advantage of having an A clarinet which is exceptionally easy to play and feels just like a good B-flat clarinet, so the switching is easy for me. Not everyone is so lucky with A clarinets, from what I hear!

i use two different mpc because the A i'm using responds better with my m13 and my Bb responds better with my m14. I also have two different ligs. for both mpcs.

I use one mouthpiece and just switch that. I have a set of R13s to use, so the switch is relatively easy...

Why would you use two??????? If you do that you have two different set ups, two different reeds to be playing and really if you are about to sit and play in an orchestra, tell me a conductor who wants the sound of his clarinet player changing. It might be easier in some pieces, ie Shostakovich Nine where you are changing so often it isn't funny, but really why not just learn to change quick!!!!

I played Shostakovich Nine this year and there is no reason why you would want to have two different mouthpieces and reeds. None at all. Needless to say I switch my mouthpiece between my A and Bb. IMHO, it would be courting disaster to have one mouthpiece and reed going cold and drying out whilst you were playing on the other instrument.
