Hello,
I think I've finally caught my breath after the OU Clarinet Symposium. It was great again, of course. David Etheridge puts on such a wonderful event every year, assisted by all of his fabulous students.
I wanted to particularly congratulate the Young Artists competition winners. All 6 finalists played wonderfully, and they proved to be equally good people too!
The judges, including me, were: Chad Burrow (newly hired University of Michigan clarinet professor), Wojciech Komsta (NYC clarinet repairman and free-lance clarinetist), and Michael Norsworthy (Boston Conservatory professor and clarinetist).
If you know any of the finalists (I believe a few of them use this bulletin board), please congratulate them. They were:
1st Prize: Taylor Marino (North Carolina)
2nd Prize: Deanna Dimmick (New Mexico)
3rd Prize: Katie McKiernan (Kansas)
Honorable mention: April Benlein (New Mexico)
John Hong (I don't remember his state, sorry)
Ryder Naymik (Texas)
This year, we changed to a format where the finalists all played a new composition that I commissioned, so that noone would have any advantage having played the final piece before. This year's competition piece was written by Maurice Saylor, a Washington, DC composer. He also wrote a new composition which I'll premier at the ICA convention in Portugal this August. I think the new format worked very well and I've already gotten verbal commitments from rather famous composers for the next two years new works! If you know anyone that is interested in submitting a competition piece for future years, please have them contact me.
All finalists won cash and merchandise prizes, donated by vendors that were in attendance at the symposium.
I'm already looking forward to next year!
Cheers,

Taylor Marino. He's a fine player. Met him at All State and we'll be sharing the same teacher in the fall.
