Many clarinetists are judging the Bonade inverted ligatures' capabilities on entirely defective examples. If LeBlanc could get their act together re: quality control (they are the distributors), the Bonade inverted would be for many the finest ligature on the market. The problem is that every one of them comes deformed and it takes a couple of needle-nosed pliers to bend them to their properly intended shape. The 2 long rails are the only thing that should be touching the reed. At present, the bands touch the edges of the reed which totally nullifies the design properties of the ligature.

I ordered two and sent them both back. They were not shaped in the intended design, and even as a very amateur player, I could see it.

I bought a new Bonade inverted a few weeks ago. To find a good one, I inspected more than half a dozen in the store. In addition to the problem Gregory Smith describes above, most of them had sharp edges under the screws, guaranteed to scratch up the mouthpiece. Of the half dozen I looked at, only one seemed properly made to me. It's a good ligature, IMHO, although I protected the back of my mpc with clear package tape anyway. Checking several ligatures isn't a problem when I could do it in a local , but mail ordering a Bonade inverted right now is not something I'd do, because of the aggravation of returning the misshapen ones.

I checked one out that was on the clarinet instructors horn out at the college. He too had to dig through the box to find a good one. After comparing it to my old Harrison, I wasn't impressed. The basic design is not that much different. The only real advantage I could see was the Bonade didn't appear to be critical to over tightening. I'll stick with my old Harrison.

I agree with Greg Smith about the Bonades. With work, they are excellent, but I wish they would come from the factory in playable condition. I usually prefer the regular Bonades, but they also need work, and they don't seem to last as long as they used to.

I have not spent money on a new Bonade ligature in quite a while but I do have several older ones that in some cases are made of a much heavier gauge metal which some call "German Silver". I think that this is better for several reasons: They are much less likely to snap when tightening them, especially the inverted ones. The older ones are almost always used and are not usually misshapen like the new ones and probably won't scratch up your mouthpiece. I find that when using the heavier-metal Bonades, I'm able to use freer blowing reeds without loosing structure to the sound and solidity of articulation. If you can't find older Bonades, call Phil Muncy and try some of his silver plated Bonades.... they might not be all jacked up like these ones that people are complaining about. To the 'old schoolers' out there: Didn't Daniel Bonade only invent and patent the non-inverted ligature and didn't the inverted one come around much later?
