 chipped mouthpiece
Author: Sambo 933

hello,

I recently noticed that my mp has a chip on the edge of the face. My tone is unaffected until I start playing notes in the alltissimo register, everything else plays fine. The alltissimo notes are much more prone to skeaking and are actually pretty hard to get out without skeaking.

I intend to buy a new mp, but I really need to try some other models out before I make a decision. I have to audition and preform in two days so I don't have time to order them try them out and buy one before then.

I was wondering if anyone new a good temporary fix for a chipped mp that is made out of ebonite?

Hi Sambo - I suggest you make a Search [above] of our archives, as we have had similar ?'s discussed earlier. Is your "chip" on the tip or a rail or on the table [behind the "wind-cut"] ? If its small, some repairers have said that filling with an epoxy, and smoothing out the surfaces MAY work. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

You might try filling in the chip with cork grease. It's hard to know if this would help without further information, but what's the worst thing that could happen by trying?

Isn't there a store nearby that you can at least get a reasonable mouthpiece to hold you over temporarily? If not, I'd say that you should borrow a mouthpiece from a friend. Trying to repair it yourself could make it completely unplayable.
When you do get around to buying a mouthpiece, get a second one, so you have a spare.
