How many reeds do you buy?
Author: srattle

Just wondering,

How many reeds (approx.) do you buy each month?

I usually go through between 1 and 2 packs a month, sometimes more.

I need roughly one reed per 30 hours of playing.

1-3 packs a month, depending on how much I practice ;)

It's totally crazy, I used to consistantly go through a box of ten per month (give or take) but with the Vandoren 56s, I seem to get about three times as much time out of them !!!!

Weird.

I use around 95% of the reeds in the box and maybe 4-5 are concert quality. I play for around 4 hours per day sometimes even more and I would say I use around 7-8 boxes a year.

Too many--and I don't play as much as I used to when I was young and gullable to think that hours of practice would make me into the next Harold Wright. (slow tongue has always been my "downfall") But now that the new Forestone is on the market--and the Legeres are constantly improving--my mega-box buying sprees of cane reeds may be close to over.

Not enough -- a box of 10 Van Dorens every other year, maybe. And this is with playing 2-3 times a week on the average.

Paul,

I agree with you on the 56s. Funny thing though - I can usually play a 56 single reed for a week before it goes "dead", then I can play it for a few days in its "dead" state before it comes back to be better than ever for a few weeks. Then I can clip 'em off a bit and keep using them for a few more weeks. I play mostly traditional jazz, so it is a lot more forgiving, but, they sure are a remarkable reed for me.

I've known many professional classical performers who had the 56s go "dead" in mid performace and they have sworn off of them for life. I almost did, too, at the beginning, but MAN, when those things come back to life - they are the best reed on the market in my opinion. NOTE: using my thumbnail to scrape off the dead cells from base of the reed after every few sessions is imperative to the 56's life.

I'm so happy to find another 56 user!! :)

I used to go through a box of reeds every few months before the 56s - half of which were virtually unplayable to begin with. The 56 I'm using now is toward the end of it's second month of play...admittedly, it has already been clipped and will be wearing out soon, but there's nothing like having a familiar reed waiting for you - knowing what it is gonna do for ya, and knowing it will be there to hit that note!

With Kind Regards,
Fuzzy

So few that I don’t dare saying it here. I don’t practice little but never long - somehow the reeds last really long.

Depends on how much I'm playing. Going full steam, 4-8 reeds per month per clarinet.
