Selmer Signet Special 100 - wood or plastic?
Author: musicallychallenged

Hello.

I recently acquired a Selmer Signet Special 100 clarinet. I'm a new clarinet player (at age 52) so I don't know much about the instruments themselves.

It looks like it may be plastic (although not as shiny as my Selmer Bundy), but if I look closely, I can see a slight grain under the black surface.

Were these wood, plastic, or some other synthetic material?

Thanks.

Rick

They are definitely wood but some of the older ones were finished with
a very shiny black paint or tinted varnish which makes them look a little
like plastic.

I;ve seen, worked on and played several Signets, and have been pleased with their playability and mellow tonal character. While they are considered to be "Intermediates", between student and pro in quality, they are, IMHO, very suitable for all but the most demanding playing. Take care of the woods, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I bought a used Selmer Signet Special (vintage '90s) that I got as a temporary replacement for my Selmer 9 which was in the shop at the time. I was amazed at the nice tone of the Signet Special for my style of playing: jazz, big band and pop music. The clarinet also seems 'bullet prove' in construction. Good for me, also a novice player, but in my '70s.

Enjoy the Signet Special !

Yes, I also bought the subject clarinet for $100 for my ten year old granddaughter. After I did everything possible to it, it turned out to be a quite fine instrument. Some tuning work was done and some cork pads were added. It could compete with some very good instruments. Good luck!
