 Upgrade to Artley Bb Clarinet?
Author: billj

My child has a 1986 (via serial number) Artley student clarinet. I realize I can make a long-term investment and save significant money over continuing to rent.

Does anyone have an upgrade (recommended model) for this type of student?

Thanks!

How long have they been playing and do you see them continuing through/after high school?

It depends on the age of the child and how much you are willing to invest. On wwbw.com you can find clarinets from $100 up. I'd favor the established major brands, Buffet, Selmer and Leblanc. Don't go overboard if you think the instrument will be abused. Plan on a later upgrade when the child becomes a serious student. If you consider a used instrument (actually, any instrument), make sure you can get it checked out and return it if not satisfactory.

What does the teacher recommend? What does your local store recommend?

I'd spring for a good moutpiece and and a service/regulation every so often.

If you're into upgrading, check out http://www.clarinuts.com/ (a sponsor of the BBoard) for good 2nd hand instruments with some trial and warranty period.

I certainly rate the Artley clarinet low on the totem pole of clarinets. Intonation is just not as good as the B12 Buffet or Yam student models.

About 1 year, but I am not sure if playing will continue after high school.

I think that the 17s is the clarinet in question, and I have actually swap that clarinet for something else. This clarinet, with its age, has no real residual value left and I would agree that it should be replaced.

For your child, I would think that it would be better had he decide to fund for a better clarinet himself and voice out this decision to opt for a better instrument to you, since that to me is a more definite way of showing commitment.
