Can anyone help me find information on how to date a Uebel Clarinet? I have the serial number and pictures, but am having a hard time tracking down any information on it. Help!

I have two F. Arthur Uebel clarinets; one is an Oehler-system Bb, and the other an almost-full-Boehm "A" clarinet. Perhaps one of my clarinets could date yours? Could be a match made in heaven............

Having made my dumb joke, all I can tell you is that my Uebel Bb clarinet is serial number 65,xxx and my "A" has a number in the 71,xxx range. They both seem like reasonably modern instruments, but I can't put a date on them. I think the town in which they were made, Markneukirchen, was in the East German sector during the Soviet era and so I'm wondering if the Uebel clarinets made during that era would have been marked GDR (which mine are not)?

But is it an F.A.Uebel or a G.R.Uebel?
F.A.Uebel are still in business: http://www.f-arthur-uebel.de/

It seems that, due to the info on german sites, that the serialnumbers on F.A.Uebel clarinets are in the format: modelnumber (3-digits), year (2-digits), productionnumber. I'm not absolutely sure but thats what I also hear from other FAU owners. I have a couple of Uebel clarinets and the serials seems to match this rule.

Hi, the info from PeterPC is correct.
I had an FA Uebel Boehm system Eb clarinet serial number 811-751347. I could not find an email address so I wrote to Uebel in April 2006 regarding spare barrels and received a very kind repy from Frank König of JA Musik GmbH www.ja-musik.com 811 was the model number - 75 the year of manufacture etc. He also gave the information that Uebel Boehm clarinet production ceased in 1989 and German system clarinet production ceased in 2005.
So serial number 608 4621... should be model 608, year 1946 etc...
I was very impressed with the craftsmanship of my Eb clarinet - I'd love to find an Uebel Bb plateau model.

I think the 608 classification began in the 70's, after F. Arthur Uebel passed away. My Uebel from the 60's only has numbers (6x,xxx) on it; its logo is different from the later generation Uebel as well.
If you can post a picture, it is easier to identify the period.

Thanks Malcolm for supporting my info. I too love the Uebel clarinets and I still own a couple of them. There are still a lot of Uebels in the Netherlands (very payable) and Germany. I keep my eyes open and let you know if I find a plateau model (I've only seen one in about 6 years............).
regards,
