 Emergency repair, any help appreciated
Author: Bbnoted

Tim Clark is my repairman, but unfortunately he is booked until September.

I tried to contact Mark Jacobi at (215) 569-8739 and also his old listed number at (212) 391-1315 (this is now another business). The first number has been disconnected so I am not able to reach him.

I know this is last minute but I need an overhaul done on my R13 A within the next week or so due to unplanned performances.

I am usually prepared for such things and have always, always kept up with my horns. This past winter really played havoc with my clarinets, early in the year I had both scheduled to be overhauled, however Tim was only able to address the Bb (which is done) due to his own time constraints and could not schedule the A until September.

If anyone knows of a repair person who can equal Timmys or Marks work and be able to squeeze me in I would appreciate so so much any help that you can give me.

David,

Thanks so much, I have contacted Vince and told him that you said hi! He is able to do the overhaul for me in the desired time frame so I will send it right out to him.

One more favor... I am a little nervous since I have not heard of him or seen any of his work... any praise about his abilities would set my mind at ease.

Thanks again!

Professional player, really great technician. Very, very meticulous in his work. Studied with Gigliotti (Curtis?) and jazz sax with Dennis Sandole (Coltrane's teacher). He's in his late 50's or early 60's. Really nice guy.

Players from several states travel to use him - I've met at his shop players from Virginia, DC, Mass., NY.

Phila. Orch players use him - and I have full trust in his work. He's not a fortune either.

There are several threads mentioning his name here by players. Try searching his name.

There are sloppy repairman, unimaginative, careless, etc - he isn't any one of them.

Be very specific in what you want as since you aren't going to be there to describe what you like, want, need by showing and demonstrating. That's for any repairman.

David, thanks again. Knowing your reputation from reading you on the board I trust your judgment that the work will be done to satisfaction.

I have lurked here a couple of times, and have registered only just today to inquire for help and knew that I would receive it quickly. I doubt I will be here consistantly but wanted to say that you are truly a wonderful group of people!

One last thing, did Mark move, retire or did I miss something? I hope all is well.

He got married, I think that did him in .......... ;)

Not sure what Mark's doing right now. Way back I used to go to him all the time, but he's relocated a few times and I lost track.

I can second Vince's work. Though I use someone else, from before I met Vince, I buy all my students, as well as my last clarinet from him and have seen his work. He also sets up the new instrument and he does a great job.
Mark has always done some traveling, doing repairs in other countries, perhaps he's on one of his missions now. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

As far as I know, Mark is still in the Philadelphia area but manages to do a brisk enough business by word of mouth that he doesn't advertise. I'd be surprised if that 212 number was ever his - that's a New York area code and I think he's been in Philadelphia aside from his work with Vince in Wilmington (Mark, I think, was doing the setup work on a lot of the clarinets Vince was selling). Maybe try the number with a 215 area code.

If you contact me privately I can give you someone's number who will know how to reach him. Vince probably knows, too, but I don't know if asking him could be a little tacky.

Karl

Worry not; your horn is in excellent hands. In addition, Vince is easy to work with and a very nice man. I seem to recall that he advertises(d) in THE CLARINET, so if you have any back issues you might check for an ad. He is well-known and very dependable.
