No doubt there is only one Drucker. He is certainly one the great and has played for countless numbers. A great performer and a super advocate of the clarinet.

From the article:

"...and a few disgruntled musicians opined last winter on a clarinet blog that Mr. Drucker should have retired sooner to give younger players a shot at his coveted job."

I guess Stanley will have more time to post rebuttals now.

I'm amazed that so many of the articles that I've seen have referred to Stanley Drucker's tenure in the NY Philharmonic as '60 years.' It doesn't take a math genius to understand that the 2008-09 season is his Sixty-First Season in the Orchestra and his Forty-Ninth as Principal Clarinet. He deserves full credit!!

I love reading (up-to-date) articles on players I idolize.

Anyone going to his performance this summer? (I see that some of you are in NY). I know he's supposed to play Copland... would have loved to see his interpretation on it live. I so want to go and see him play his retiring performance but unfortunately I live all the way on the other side (in California). bummer. :/ I regret going to New York last year. I would have held it off for the year and visited this summer just to see him perform.

I have a ticket to Stanley's final Copland performance at Avery Fisher Hall next Tuesday.
A friend is attending this evening.
No surprise: the performances are sold out.
Will report back.

Somewhere in that great big, beautiful Studio in the Sky (with perfect acoustics for clarinet), Leon and Bernie are looking down on their beloved son and feelin' mighty proud.

Be sure to listen to the audio files. There are three of them.
Dan Wakin, who wrote the article and interviewed Stanley,
was treated to playing a Beethoven trio with Stanley and Naomi, though it's not on tape here, nor does he mention it in the article.
At the conclusion of their collaboration, Stanley offered a wonderfully dry, left-handed compliment. He allowed as how Dan is probably the best clarinetist......at The New York Times.

Love Stanley, have for years. Sat next to him many times at the Philharmonic, he was always right on & in top form.

So lets all contribute some great Stanley "one-liners" like:

"Hey John, did you ever have a day when your reed wasn't just perfect?"

Or:

"I love 3 things in life; my clarinet, a good cigar, and Women...not necessarily in that order!"

"no tails"

Drucker lecture Toronto Clarfest. He said a conductor (Metropolis if I recall) said that a lot about cutting off in time so as not to carry over into someone elses note.

At Thursday's performance, Stanley was officially entered into the Guinness Book of World Records. A video tribute by some of his colleagues and music directors was shown. His performance of the Copland was beautiful and, most characteristic of Stanley, FUN!

He also received a Proclomation from NYC Councilmember Gail Brewer, whose district includes Lincoln Center/Avery Fisher Hall.

I don't know about that Guiness record, though, for clarinet performance longevity. Al Gallodoro certainly had a longer career.

The Guinness record is specifically for Symphony Orchestra players.

"The Guinness record is specifically for Symphony Orchestra players."

That explains it - didn't catch that.

I've heard all the recordings over the last 40 years, seen live performances, seen the numbers. I watched Hugh Downs' failed attempt at an interview during a live performance. And nothing put a human face on Mr. Drucker until the article that David Blumberg linked to above.

Small things from this article uncover an entire new world about Mr. Drucker. That his sailboat uses the childhood nickname of his wife of 53 years. That they have two grown children who are musicians, one of whom is pretty well known. That Mr. Drucker's studio is full of incredible momentos.

For me, after all these years, this for the first time showed insight into Mr. Drucker as a normal person.

Thanks.
