Know any good professional clarinet dealers?
Author: Joey Garza

Hi, me again. I was wondering, does anyone know where I can find a good store that sells professional clarinets through mail order or via the internet. Even better, does anyone know where I can find one in South Texas? The few local instrument suppliers don't seem to deal with the professional instruments, but rather with the intermediate band student models. If anyone can help me, I would be thankful.

I'm not sure what the situation is down in south Texas, but where I live, in North Texas, there are several Brook Mays stores in the area that sell professional clarinets. I bought my R-13 from them for a decent price about 2 years ago. Also take a look at the Woodwind and Brasswind Catalog. They sell several professional clarinets, for decent prices too. I believe the web address is http://www.wwandbw.com/. About 5 years ago, I bought an intermediate model, a Buffet E-11 from them, but they have a fairly wide selection of professional models. I hope this helps, at least a little.
Amy :)

Joey,
There's plently of stores that will sell mail-order. Go to the Resources/Retail section here on Sneezy and call the 6 or 7 of them listed.

Try Witcita Band Instruments. They have a Web page. Very nice people. Prices are competitive.

I'm in Central Texas. How far south are you from Austin?

Brooks Mays has a good selection of pro-grade Buffets in stock in their "pipeline". In other words, if a particular store doesn't have exactly what you would like, chances are pretty good that another one of their stores has it on the shelf. Their prices are usually pretty good, too.

Last time I dropped by the store, their flyer still had a front page ad for Buffet Festivals for $2048 (plus tax, of course).

WW and BW is a well respected mail order house that advertises fully checked out and tweaked R-13s for a good price as a full page ad in their big catalog.

I'm sure there are other sources for pro-grade horns around. However, I believe that your initial opinion is correct. The vast majority of the music instrument stores cater to the student crowd. Finding good pro-grade stuff is often a frustrating experience, especially if the request is a small dollar item (reed rushes, higher grade drill books, better mouthpieces, better reeds, etc.). At least that's what I've seen in my area recently.

Try H&H Music. They're connected to Brook Mays and they're found all around Texas: San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and such. They're sorta the BIG GUYS in Texas, meaning that they like to buy out little dinky stores. But, they do have great prices. Otherwise, just go for WWandBW or Witchita Band. :o)

Hey! Thanks for all the good info. As for where I'm at, let's just say that I'm about as far south in Texas as you can get without being in Mexico. I live in the Rio Grande Valley, where Brownsville and McAllen are at. Thanks again everyone for the good advice! =o)

Give Ridenour Clarinet Products (Tom Ridenour)a go. You won't regret it. I bought a clarinet from him from here in Australia via the 'net, and I'm delighted with it, and the service he gave. His website is http://home.gte.net/klarinet/ and he's based in Denton Texas.

Good luck,

Roher Harvey

Denton, TX is the home of The University of North Texas, which has a well known and highly respected school of music. It's the home of the famous "One O'Clock Lab Band", which grew players for Johnny Carson's Tonight Show Band, and many other high profile, highly skilled, and highly rewarded bands. Professional orchestras also recruited members from that school of music.
