Hello friends, I have a suggestion, from now on, only reply to a bulletin IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION. So many people are replying to quesitons that they dont know the answers to, sad. It is literally the blind leading the blind. Think about that from now on.

ron - get used to it. That's how BBoards work, and sometimes off-topic or uninformed responses get other interesting discussions running.
There's enough working pros on the Bboiard to set things straight.

Ron, as both of the the threads you responded to, I also had previously responded to, is it I that you are referring to as not knowing what I'm talking about? If you have a problem with me or the information I post, I ask that you email me about it rather than posting such negative comments on the board. If you take the time to read the posting asking about the R-13 and the R-13 Vintage, Fred was asking how to tell them apart. Rather than going into detail in how they are different, I answered his question of how to tell them apart. Note that he did not ask about the R-13's of the 1950's. The serial number which he referred to is too recent to be on even the Boosey serial number lists. Also, I am offended by your reference to other languages as "BS". Somebody posted a greeting in Dutch, with reference to the clarinet. I did my best to provide a reasonable translation and try to communicate. I request that think of other people's feelings before posting. Also, if you have any gripes about me or what I post, do send them to my email address (just click on my name underlined in blue at the top of this post), rather than posting negativity on the board. I myself, have encountered incorrect information on the BB from time to time. Rather than insulting people, I give the facts and opinions that I have. You and your opinions are certainly welcome here, just do respect others' feelings. Thank you. Have a nice day. -- Nate Zeien

Nate's comments were EXACTLY what I needed about the R-13 vs R-13 Vintage. I have been a player for almost 40 yrs, and own a variety of clarinets including a classic R-13 from the mid 60's. I have access to the published material from B&H and understand the technical differences between the models. What B&H didn't provide was how you tell them apart when you look at them.

Ron,
This BB is a fantastic place for us uninformed to learn. A little unrelated discussion and opinions make it fun to read. I say, the more info the better. Thanks Mark and everyone else who puts the time and effort into this BB, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. This is by far the best monitored BB I have come across.

We have Mark to thank for Sneezy, but we Al Gore to thank for the internet! ;-) What would Al Gore know about clarinets anyway? -- Nate Zeien

Al told me that he invented the clarinet too. My two cents - the more comments the better, a reality check for most of us and more fun also. This BB has everything - drama, information, jokes, spirited exchanges, pathos - keep it just the way it is! - and support it with your pledges!

Re Al Gore:
Anyone who kisses like that has to be a clarinet player---Maybe even a Bass Clarinet player. Should we ask Tipper?

There is a limit to the usefulness of heresay or factual conclusions drawn from opinion. SO, whenever I spout anything which may be in whole or part, heresay, I always present a caveat. ((Of course, defining heresay is a problem all & to itself!))
Ex: Vandoren Reeds are purposely thicker/stiffer/UN-balanced on the left side based upon a theorum in a book by Benade.
Here is an excerpt from the Klarinet Archives:
---------------------------------------------------------------
"I use a dial micrometer to check my reed finishing, on which I can read and
make thickness adjustments of a quarter of a thousandth (0.00025"), using a
knife, a flat file and 1200 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper. When I was learning
to do this, I spent hours matching my model reeds to the model, measuring at
increments of maybe 3/64" across and up the reed.
Of course that was finer than it really need to be. Even at the most
sensitive spots, a thickness difference of about half a thousandth (0.0005")
is the smallest one I could feel in playing. Also, as I got more practiced
at it, I learned to skip a lot of the intermediate measurements and simply
blend them in.
The advice to make the reed stiffer on the left to counteract the rotation of
the clarinet on the thumb comes from Daniel Bonade's Reed Manual (still
available from Leblanc). Frankly, I have never found the rolling to happen,
and my reeds play best when exactly balanced left and right. What does make
a big difference is Kalmen Opperman's technique of making the reed very
slightly narrower than the outside of the mouthpiece rails, holding the reed
on with your thumb and testing it a microscopic amount left or right to find
the most resonant spot, and then carefully putting the ligature on to hold
the reed just right."
-----------------------------------------------------
I haven't read anywhere that Vandoren has agreed that they purposely cut/finish the reeds in this fashion because of Benade. Could it have been based upon a theorum of Rose's, etc. Parts of this maybe true, parts may be heresay.
***Without some give & take, info might never be shared. Opinion is great, as long as it is identified as such (IMHO, IMO), and there is not that certain tacit suggestion of absolute "correctness".***
Nate did NOTHING wrong. I'm certainly glad Nate is with us.
Lets keep on keepin' on !
