I just saw an 8 reed box of reeds......
Gigliotti brand - struck me as unusual having 8 instead of 10 reeds. Tried them way back and thought were pretty good, but didn't notice that they came 8 to a box.
The shrinking box....

What do you want? 7 good out of 8, or 1 out of 10? ;-)

I've seen this brand of reeds for sale at 1stop for at least 2 if not 3 or 4 years and they have always been 8 reeds per box.

In college sometimes it was 1 out of 20
Never noticed that Iceland (I don't play them) - wonder if it's the only brand on the clarinet market that gives 8 instead of 10 (excepting Reserve which is 5)

Boxes have been shrinking for years. Once upon a time Vandorens came 25 in a box and Morres 12.

FWIW, I have a box of those reeds that's, maybe, 5 or 6 years old (or older) that has 8 reeds in it (and it says so on the box).

I rely on my reeds from the Guy who packs them one to a 'box' and have never been dissappointed in over six years. I apologize for being off topic. When I read about problems with cane, I can't help but reinforce my very positive experiences with synthetics, especially Guy's.

The main advantage to cane - even if you like the sound that comes from synthetic reeds that are currently available - is that you can adjust them more finely to satisfy your own individual needs. It isn't just a question of strength - it's also where the resistance comes from (how the material is distributed over the reed, its profile or cut) and how the distribution affects response that make reed preferences so individual. With synthetics you take what you get as far as profile is concerned.

What if the man who used to put the one good reed in every box of 10 Vandoren is now working on the box of 50 production line!!!!!!!! 1 in 50 would do wonders for the plastic reed market.

To be honest, if I only found one good reed in a box of 10 Vandorens I'd be more inclined to blame my mouthpiece than the reeds...

Ice cream.
Have you noticed? In the grocery store, they used to sell ice cream in 2-qt. containers. Then they reduced the size to 1.75-qt. containers but kept the same price per carton. Now they sell ice cream in 1.5-qt. containers (same price). In my town, this has all happened within the last three years.
Probably the same deal with reeds. Trying to cleverly conceal real price increases by reducing quantity. I am not fooled.

...and did you notice that the cereal packages may have same front size as always but are thinner than ever? Within 5 years they'll sell corn flakes in envelopes, ahtellsya.

They do claim that cereals are good for losing weight.

Bob,
Does that mean that the less cereal you eat, the less weight you'll lose? If so, then smaller cereal boxes are a bad trend.
I prefer to munch on old reeds. High in fiber. Yum.
