How Many Clarinets Do You Own?
Author: The Dad
Date: 2000-11-04 17:31

I was just wondering how many clarinets you own, and what do you use them for.

I have an R-13, a Noblet 45, and a Vito Bass. My oldest daughter has a Leblanc Esprit. My other daughter has a Buffet B-10.

There is also an old Conn around from my high school days

Hi,

I have a buffet I use for performances, a Student amati I use for outdoor things, a Bundy I use for experimenting with key system designs and tuning devices and a Selmer 35 bass clarinet.

i have a Selmer 10, R13, an opus and a jean Cartier that is on the market. just purchased an alto sax which I'm not sure what i going to do with. I play all of my horns--they are all great and i enjoy each of them. Every once in a while i have to check which one I'm playing.
it's not the horn it's the player.

I have an R-13 from the late 60's, a Buffet from circa 1910, A Bb/A pair of Albert(?) Buffets, a Boosey & Hawkes, and a pair of silver clarinets - one Boehm and one Albert. The first two are played daily.

I have a few saxophones also. A great buescher C melody Circa 1920 and an evil conn from 1970 that would make better sheet metal than saxophone.

Gee we only have five and there are two clarinetists in the house. Only one good one that isn't an Albert system!

I better get shopping.

All Bb Festival, Vito, Bundy, Ferdinand. B and F suitable for gladious vases.

The Albert is a Conservatoire, or so marked, It has the best tone of all.

I have a Freeman that I've had since '61 and use it the most. Also a Vito for outdoors, an old Jeffrey, Rene Dumont, 2 old Pedlers (1925 & 1936), an Elkhart (silver), a holton (brass laquered), an Olds (silver), an old Conn oboe, a Yamaha tenor sax, a horrible Conn alto (shooting star), a King euphonium, a Conn Eb tuba, and a Reynolds french horn that I WISH I could play. Then there's my wife and daughters collection.

I think I have eight and there are only two players in my house. One is a C and the rest Bbs-- Selmer, 3 Leblancs, a Thibaud, a Vito Bass, and an old metal one that I can't recall the name. I'm thinking of selling at least one because I would like to add a Eb Alto to my collection. I wouldn't mind a Eb soprano also.

Of course there are the other instruments, key boards, baby grand, etc, etc. etc...

Me, a mere 2 clarinets. An R-13 that gets played daily and my old plastic Conn from my high school days as a backup. There's also a trombone around here and a keyboard.

Ah well if we go out to other instruments we have
a small orchestra, a bluegrass band, most of a Balkan band (village or urban), most of a jazz band or a rock band (no drum set, no sax). That is

5 clarinets,
4 guitars and electric keyboards,
3 accordions and recorders
2 kavals, electric basses, violins and banjos,
1 upright bass, upright piano, tambura, dobro, mandolin, pipa, butterfly harp, frula, standard flute, a moon guitar (china), concertina,

several misc. chiense flutes, several harmonicas,
AND a PARTRIGE IN A PEAR TREE...

This post makes me wary, as a United States citizen and owner of numerous clarinets and saxophones of all pitches, that this request for information of this nature may be some kind of clandestine attempt to get us to register our clarinets so that they may be latter confInscated by some equally insideous government agency???? I, therefore, plead my constitutional right not to respond to the specifics of this request in order that I may protect my right equip myself as an American Musician with any number and all manner of instrument as may be neccessary to do battle against the ever-present threat of music illiteracy by playing good music for whoever will listen and stress that I will only give up my clainet when you pry it from my dead embouchure.

While you may think that Mark was being a bit paranoid ...
Friends of mine have extensive collections of instruments displayed in their homes, but precious few know about them. Insurance seldom covers collections, and replacing them is impossible - never mind the whole idea of someone breaking into your house.

I was not trying to pry. I just thought that it would be a fun issue to discuss.

I apologize if I was being inappropriate.

My applogies to all who (Dad especially) misunderstood my attempt at a little humour this Sunday am. My only intent was to hear a collective "guffaw" from all who serf unto this website--I did not intend to make fun of anyone except those of us who, from time to time, take ourselfves a bit too seriously. Good clarineting to all.

I, too, found William's posting funny - but like everyhting, there's always "the dark side". Stranger things have happened ...

The Dad, your posting was most appropriate; all Mark W. did was give us his reason for not posting. It's always wise to remember that most of us don't really know each other and that this is a very public BBoard. I really don't like it when people volunteer too much about themselves, either, especially the young - all we need is for some pedophile to browse the board and find a victim ... I don't want to see this URL in the nightly news as part of a "we caught a predator last night" news show ...

I can't answer this question because if Shadow Cat finds out how many...not *that* many, Shadow, really. Honest. Not very many at all.... And it's not true that they breed in the night....

I share the paranoia about talking about this stuff now. That business with Mark Hattner's clarinets is a total horror show. I just had a one-word, multi-question-mark e-mail from Doubledge and can't even decide whether to answer him or not. I'm leaning toward the idea of "No," since I don't think I even want to be on speaking terms with him.

I OWN an R13 Bb and an old plastic Bruno Bb that my sister now uses. In addition, I also have a flute. I borrow from the university two plastic Bbs for Pep Band and an R13 A for orchestra. I also have a piccolo for the musical I am doing pit for. Oh yeah, and an R13 Eb from the university also that is used for VT Wind Ensemble.

What's funny is that I have a fireplace in my room and the instruments get stored in there (No, it isn't used, obviously) My roomate looks every now and exclaims in wonder "Jodi, how many instrument do you HAVE????!!"

Don't worry William, some big celeb will stand up for us. Maybe not Charlton Heston (he's busy with that other group), but maybe Woody Allen.

I have an R-13 (w/ silver keys), a Normandy (an old one), and a metal one. I think the metal one is Gold Star or something (it has a good star on it and a gold bell). I also have a Germainheardt (I can't spell!) flute and a 1917 Holton satin silver alto sax, both of which I use in Jazz Ensemble.

I just got my Malerne and am having it repadded and corked. I am excited about this new horn. Upon arrival the horn was a bit dirty from being stored but overall in excellent shape. The technicians view was "its built like a Buffet". Hopefully when it done it will be a really good horn.
The metal and wood work was sure well done. The bell ring is amazingly heavy and the wood has a beautiful lustre to it, not a crack anywhere to be found. I think it will be a real step up from plastic Yamahaha.
