As I was druvung home yesterday the Met was doing part of the Wagner Ring Cycle (unfortunately I drove out of the range of the station to hear it all, as I do have a lead foot!). The bass clarinet playing was beautiful and had the BIG CLARINET sound that was so impressive. Pretty solos for bass too. Made me pull out the excerpt book to play ot as i returned! If they re-broacast be sure to catch it.

Yes, Eefer, I heard the broadcast too and the clarinets all sounded wonderful. Bass cla part is bigger than the principal part in the Ring cycle. Ognibene did a great job.

Jim Ognibene has been the Principal Bass Clarinetist at the Met for years. He's a terrific player, musician & friend.
I'm sure he'd love to hear all your praise of his wonderful playing.
I can forward your comments to him.

All of the above, and a former student of mine, too!

John,
Yes, please forward the comments! A bass doesn't get to shine as often as the Bb so I'm sure it would be good for him to hear the comments. Both his sound and expression in this performance were exceptional. Even pulled off the highway at the end of the first act as the solo was so stunning.
Do you know what horn/ equipment he uses?
Actually I think a 5 hour rehearsal at the Met MIGHT be more fun than most. Imagine hearing those voices! I've played in opera pits a couple of times and enjoyed it but it sure wasn't the Met!

Hi Ebclarinet1:
I don't know what Jim was using at the broadcast all of you heard, but he just bought a great Clark W. Fobes Bass mpc from Clark when he was here in NYC. The facing was Clark's "CF" model. Jim uses various Selmer Bass Clarinets and models.
He could sound great on a plastic Bundy!

I heard part of the broadcast last week too, and was impressed by the bass clarinet playing -- great sound!

I was on my way up to Jimmy Yan's a couple years ago to get some work done on my bass. I raised my hand to knock on the door, and heard the most beautiful, fluid, luminous, rich-sounding bass clarinet chromatic scale I've ever heard in my life. Instead of knocking, I stood there listening for maybe five minutes as the guy played scales, arpeggios, the Daphnis excerpt plus others I didn't know, all flawlessly and with such a gorgeous, deep, rich sound. I was completely transfixed. I realized then that I had heard exactly what the bass clarinet was really supposed to sound like. It was almost a spiritual experience--like if God had played the horn for me, that's exactly how it would have sounded. Finally whoever it was stopped playing and I went in. Well, you don't start blabbering superlatives to someone in a situation like that, you just quietly unpack your instrument so Jimmy can look at it. The guy noticed my Series 9 bass and said, "Nice horn." I said, "Yeah, you too" or something equally lame. After he left, I turned to Jimmy and whispered "Who the hell WAS that??!!" It was Jim Ognibene.
