 Olds Studio Clarinet maker?
Author: Phil Pedler

I wonder if anyone has information as to which French maker made the Olds Studio Clarinet in the 1950s. Pictures can be found here:

The clarinet has "post-anchoring screws" at the base of some of the posts. Two makers who used such screws seem to be Thibouville and La Monte.

Does anyone have more information on this?

Thanks,
Phil

The Olds Opera was a stencil Buffet R-13, but the lower grades were made by another maker. The Studio is definitely not a Buffet, and it's also not a Pedler, which would have had the trill key guide around only the top key.

Sorry I can't help further.

That's really helpful information about the Olds Opera!

Could you explain what you mean by "trill key guide around only the top key"?
I assume you mean the top of 4 trill keys to be operated by the right hand and on the top keyed joint. But I have never seen a guide on any Pedler that matches this. I assume you must be talking about a special Pedler model.

And do you happen to know who made the Pedler horns?

For the Olds Studio, I am leaning toward La Monte or Malerne.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil -

On Buffet models, there is a key guide, about even with the pad on the throat A key. It fits around the top two trill keys.

On at least the Pedler I have, the guide is about 3/4" higher, so that it fits around only the top trill key.

I think Pedler made its own clarinets, but I'm willing to be corrected on this.

Phil: that trill key guide is unusual.....I've only ever seen it on an A.Fontaine wood clarinet, which I believe was made by Couesnon around the sixties
