 Equipment questions
Author: NKB

I have a bunch of old clarinet stuff I've acquired over the years, and I'd
like get some information these things. Could you please give me some information about the quality and reputation of these items? I haven't used any of them myself, just sort of collected them through random ways. So, if you have any information regarding these items, please let me know!

Rather than give you my opinion, I'll give you the general consensus on these.

Legeree 2.5 plastic reed
>One of the better modern synthetic reeds.

> Noblet mouthpiece
>student quality. Nothing special

> Clark Forbes, San Francisco, Debut mouthpiece
[Fobes] well respected and used by many players. Debut is inexpensive. San Fran model is hand made.

> Click barrel
>adjustable barrel for changing one's intonation. Most say the tone is not good but it's a very handy item to own.

> Normandy 4 clarinet, Serial number A708
good student instrument.

Thanks Don. I didn't answer about the Jove Jolie and Larry Combs. Perhaps you have an opinion on those?

The Couesnon is pretty interesting. It's got superior intonation for a clarinet of that vintage (1960s) or any vintage, actually. I'm a big fan of their alto saxes which is what led to my curiosity about Couesnon clarinets.

Some older Noblet Paris mouthpieces are made by Chedeville company. These usually have facings 2V, 3V and "FRANCE" engraved (small font) on the left side. Blanks are wonderful but the original facings are not.

Many older Noblet mouthpieces have been made by Riffault. You can identify these by Egyptian style scroll and "France" (slant font) on the left side.

The Larry Combs mouthpiece was issued standard on Leblanc's Paris models such as the Opus and the Concerto. It's ok, but nothing special, yet better than most stock mouthpieces.

The Debut is really considered (by most anyway) as a beginner mouthpiece.

Regarding the Larry Combs mouthpiece, it should be noted that the mouthpieces namesake stopped using it many years ago due to, "poor product control" by Leblanc resulting in "deteriorating quality". He had then switched to a custom mouthpiece that Richard Hawkins made for him. Some years before, I had ordered 20 LC #3s for my middle school band and was surprized to discover that they were not all made from the same blank. Some people I know like them a lot, others toss them into the junk drawer or give them a "wall test". It's value is really dertermined by how it plays for you.
